Topic:  Emerging Trends in Reinforced Concrete

Synopsis:  Recent developments and emerging trends in the concrete industry are noteworthy and allow structural engineers to design reinforced concrete more easily and more economically.  The ACI 318 Code has been reorganized in the 2014 edition making compliance with provisions for design of reinforced concrete members easier.

New high-strength grades of reinforcing steel give the design engineer more choices to make reinforced concrete structures more economical.  New, innovative concrete floor systems will be highlighted since the floor can amount to 85-90 percent of the cost of the cast-in-place concrete structure.  Examples of new innovations in BIM/VDC (Building Information Modeling/Virtual Design & Construction) will be presented with emphasis placed on use of 3-D models in the reinforced concrete design & detailing workflow.
